We sent a set of questions to Ronnie to find out more about the place. Here are his answers:
1. Why did the owner(s) choose Forest Hills for Unravel?
Escape rooms are ideal outings for family and friends and coworkers of all ages. Because Escape rooms typically are only an hour long, it compliments well for people with busier schedules. I felt the Forest Hills community would both benefit and appreciate this one of a kind experience.
2. Could you please tell our readers what exactly an escape room is?
Escape rooms are mini-movies come to life. Each room is a unique setting, and you and your team have to think clearly and use all of your mental abilities within a suspenseful setting. Teams will have a set time limit to beat the challenge of the room, whether it is solving a mystery, unlocking a door or breaking a code.
3. Why should someone consider doing an escape room at Unravel?
It’s an edge of your seat immersive experience where your greatest asset is yourself and your ability to out-think the room. It provides you a challenge and an opportunity. At Unravel we really want each team to have their own custom experience, we provide unlimited clues if requested, we will not overbook a room, and provide live custom hints as opposed to canned pre-made hints.
4. What’s the most popular escape room at Unravel? Are there plans for any new rooms?
So far the response for all of our rooms has been outstanding from the community and customers. We currently are the number 1 rated Escape Room in Queens. While it is hard to say which is more popular, I should mention that there are two different rooms for play, our Photoshop Panic is geared towards first-time players, where the Wicked Workshop gives even experienced players a challenge. So depending on what you are looking for, both rooms provide a fulfilling experience. While we do not have any firm dates set for introducing additional rooms, we expect to offer more thrilling games in the near future.
5. We read that the suggested group size to do an escape room is 4 people. Can someone do it by themselves or show up and be in a group with random people they don’t know?
Part of what makes Escape Rooms so unique is that yes, you could play with people you don’t know if you do not book a full room for a private experience. We have seen mixed groups make fast friends as you learn to communicate and trust your teammates. In theory, if someone was up to the challenge they could book a private room and play by themselves for the ultimate Unravel Escape Room challenge.
6. What makes Unravel different from other escape rooms around the area?
What’s great about Escape Rooms as an industry is that no experience will be the same. Here at Unravel, we wanted to focus on more puzzle-centric rooms with smaller settings as we have found that larger groups (anything over 6 people) tend to become less of a complete team game and more subgroup pair-offs. We believe the best teams are the ones where the whole team is working together as one unit.
7. How have you seen the Forest Hills neighborhood change in the last few years and if improvements are needed, what should be the first thing we should do to make this neighborhood even better?
Being familiar with the Forest Hills neighborhood for over 20 years I am aware of the many transformations and evolutions it has grown through. Some have been great like Forest Hills Stadium becoming a proper destination again and the Jazzfest and the continuation of restaurant row. However, the diminishing presence of the locally owned small business is not ideal, anything we can do to continue to promote and encourage small business along with the larger chains would be winning formula.
Of course, parking is the bane of all!
